Packaging Compliance & Mandatory Artwork
Getting packaging print-ready means more than making sure the artwork looks right. UPC barcodes need to scan. QR codes need to work. Nutrition Facts, net contents, warnings and required statements need to meet regulatory requirements. Type needs to be large enough, information needs to be positioned correctly and every mandatory element has to survive the transition from approved design to final printed packaging.
print-ability™ handles the technical and regulatory artwork that turns approved packaging design into production-ready files.
We work with internal brand teams and agency partners to incorporate, check and maintain mandatory packaging elements across individual products, line extensions and portfolios that can run into hundreds of SKUs.
UPC Barcodes & Packaging
A barcode isn’t something we simply drop into an open space on the package. We incorporate UPC and other barcode artwork into final packaging mechanicals with consideration for size, quiet zones, orientation, contrast, surrounding graphics and the realities of the printing process. Supplied codes are checked as part of the production process so problems can be identified before artwork is released.
When packaging changes size, format, substrate or printer, the barcode needs to remain a functional part of the package, not just a graphic element. Need help placing or checking a barcode on packaging? That’s packaging production, and it’s exactly the kind of problem we handle.
QR Codes
QR codes increasingly connect physical packaging to digital content, promotions, product information and regulatory disclosures. But a QR code that works on a monitor still needs to work when it’s printed on an actual package.
We place and check supplied QR codes within production artwork while considering size, contrast, clear space and the print conditions surrounding the code. We also make sure later artwork revisions don’t inadvertently compromise an approved code. For portfolios with multiple SKUs, markets or campaigns, careful management becomes even more important when different packages require different QR destinations.
Nutrition Facts & Food Packaging
Nutrition Facts panels and other required food labeling aren’t decorative elements. Their format, typography, sizing and placement are governed by regulatory requirements.
We incorporate supplied Nutrition Facts information into production artwork with close attention to FDA formatting requirements, minimum type sizes, hierarchy, spacing and available package area. We can also manage updates across line extensions and large SKU families where nutritional information, ingredients, allergens, net contents or other required information changes from product to product.
Our role is to take approved regulatory information and make sure it is accurately and consistently implemented in the final packaging artwork.
Spirits Label Mandatories
Alcohol beverage packaging brings its own set of mandatory information and production requirements. We routinely work with spirits packaging that requires government warnings, alcohol statements, net contents, country-of-origin information, importer or bottler statements and other required label content.
Requirements can also change by market, creating multiple versions of the same package for different countries or regions. We manage those requirements within the artwork while protecting the established design and maintaining consistency across the brand. For global portfolios, that can mean coordinating regional mandatories, bilingual or multilingual copy and market-specific artwork variations across many SKUs.
Bilingual & Multilingual Packaging
Packaging designed for one market often needs to be adapted for another. print-ability™ produces bilingual and multilingual packaging artwork, including English/French packaging for Canada and multi-country adaptations involving languages such as French, German, Portuguese and Hebrew.
Translated content can change significantly in length, hierarchy and required space, while some languages introduce different composition requirements, including right-to-left reading. We adapt the artwork within the established brand architecture while maintaining consistency across markets and building accurate, production-ready files.
Net Contents, Minimum Type & Clear Space
Some of the smallest elements on a package create some of the biggest production problems. Net contents statements, minimum type requirements and required clear areas can force adjustments to an otherwise approved design.
The available display panel, package dimensions and method of reproduction can all affect how mandatory information needs to be handled. We identify these issues during production and work within the approved design system to resolve them before final artwork is released.
Certification, Recycling & Compliance Icons
Packaging increasingly carries third-party certification and disposal information alongside traditional regulatory content. We can incorporate supplied marks and required artwork including How2Recycle labels, Non-GMO Project marks, recycling symbols, PAO symbols and other certification or compliance icons, following supplied usage requirements and maintaining consistency across the packaging system.
These elements frequently change between products, sizes and markets, making careful artwork management especially important across larger portfolios.
Pet Food & AAFCO Requirements
Pet food packaging has its own dense set of labeling requirements, including nutritional and ingredient information, feeding directions, quantity statements and other content governed by federal and state requirements and industry standards such as AAFCO model regulations.
We work within approved regulatory direction to incorporate and maintain these elements across pet food and pet product packaging, including line extensions and multi-SKU families. The objective is the same as with every regulated package: make the required information work within the design while building accurate, reproducible final artwork.
Compliance Is Part of Packaging Production
Design establishes how a package should look and communicate. Production is where that design has to become a real object, with all of the technical, regulatory and manufacturing requirements that come with it.
That’s why mandatory artwork isn’t an afterthought at print-ability™. Barcodes, QR codes, Nutrition Facts, regulatory statements, net contents, warnings, certification marks and market-specific requirements are part of building packaging correctly.
Whether we’re handed one package with a barcode problem or a portfolio with hundreds of regulatory variations, the goal is the same: preserve the approved creative while making sure the final artwork is ready for the realities of print.
